Jamestown Aerial Photography: The Story

Jamestown Aerial Photography started in the summer of 2015, by Rider Tuff with loans from my Dad, Geoff Tuff, and brother, Mason Tuff. With these loans I was able to purchase the DJI Phantom 3 Professional. My other job as a lifeguard in Jamestown, RI provided the means of raising money to eventually pay off the loans. Within 30 minutes of receiving the drone in the mail, I realized the potential of using the drone as a means of generating revenue. Within 3 days of receiving the drone I had plenty of contracts with friends and family. Once I finished those contracts I decided to branch out. With the help of friends, Dale Dunning, and Tommy Miller I was able to secure contracts with two real estate companies in Jamestown. Within 2 days of completing these large projects I had my first front page article in the Jamestown Press. However this article eventually became the demise of the business. Within hours of the article being published people from all of the country emailed me telling me what a great idea the business was, but also that it was illegal. As it turns out to operate a drone commercially you need either a pilot's license or an exemption from the FAA. The FAA filed a cease and desist letter informing me of the consequences that I would face if the kept the business in operation. So upon receiving this news I shut down the business. After shutting down the business I had another front page article in the Jamestown Press explaining the demise of the business. Soon after dissolving the business I sold my drone at almost retail price and was able to end the summer with a considerable amount of money in savings. In the future I plan to continue my love for entrepreneurship through another startup.
